Most Common Sports Injuries in Children and How to Prevent It

According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 30 million children and adolescents engage in sports, and more than 3.5 million children under 14 receive medical attention due to sports-related injuries each year. Sports injuries can range from a scrape or a bruise to a broken collarbone or something more serious.

The most common child injuries are sprains and strains. A sprain is an injury in the ligament caused by stretching or tearing. While, a strain is an injury to the muscle or tendon. It can be caused by overstretching of the muscle fibers. For sprain and strain basic first aid, rest the injured area and apply ice that is wrapped in a damp towel in the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury.

Growth plate injuries are common among children in the US. The growth plate is the area where the long bones in arms and legs grow. When a growth plate is injured, it is not able to do its job correctly, and may lead to bones that are crooked or misshapen, and limbs that are short.

Injuries are common to children who play sports, but there are safeguard measures parents, guardians, or coaches can take to prevent injuries. Make sure that the child is using the right gear while playing sports. Also, train your child to have warm ups and cool downs before and after rigorous activities.
